Bobby Sanabria's two sets at Zinc were smokin', as befits this New York City treasure. A Nuyorican born and raised in the South Bronx, Sanabria is steeped in the musical traditions of the Latin Jazz greats, having performed early in his career with the likes of Mario Bauzá, Mongo Santamaría and Tito Puente. He conducts and plays with many band variations, including the Manhattan School of Music's Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra; a quartet; and, on the occasion of this show, his sextet, known as Sexteto Ibanio. As this clip shows, the music was torrid and percussive, as is Bobby's style. It was especially appropriate that Sanabria was the inaugural performer for the Dangerous Rhythms series, as he and curator/host T.J. English have been close friends for years.
